Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Shri Vishwanath Mandir, often referred to as Vishwanath Temple or Birla Temple, is a significant Hindu temple located in Varanasi, near Banaras Hindu University. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple attracts devotees from across India and around the world, who come to seek blessings for their families and eternal peace.

The temple is notable for its impressive height, featuring the tallest temple tower globally, with a Shikhara reaching approximately 250 feet (77 meters). It is an important pilgrimage site, particularly for Hindus performing rituals for their ancestors.

The history of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir is marked by repeated destruction and reconstruction due to invasions over the centuries, beginning with Qutb-ud-din Aibak in the late 12th century. Despite facing significant challenges, local devotees and patrons continually worked to restore the temple's sanctity. It wasn't until the 1930s, under the leadership of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and the Birla family, that the current structure was initiated, with completion achieved in 1966.

Inside the temple, there are multiple shrines dedicated to various deities, including Lakshmi Narayan, Durga, and others, fostering an inclusive environment open to all castes and religions. The inner walls are adorned with inscriptions from the Bhagavad Gita and other sacred texts, further enriching its spiritual ambiance.

Located within the BHU campus, Shri Vishwanath Mandir serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural and educational hub for students and visitors alike.
