Scindia Ghat

Scindia Ghat, also known as Shinde Ghat, is a unique and significant site in Varanasi, distinguished by its partially submerged Lord Shiva shrine. This temple, often referred to as the Ratneshwar Shiva Temple, has been underwater for around 150 years, leading to fascinating stories about its eventual complete submersion.

The ghat itself was built in 1835 by Maharani Baijabai Scindhia of Gwalior, who named it in honor of her family. Historically, it was known as Veereshwar Ghat, named after a local figure who established the Atmaveereshwar temple in 1302. According to local belief, this area is where Agni, the Hindu God of Fire, was born.

In addition to the Ratneshwar Shiva Temple, Scindia Ghat is home to several other significant temples, including Parvateshwar Shiv and Dattatreshwar. The ghat's serene ambiance makes it a popular spot for early morning meditation and spiritual practices.

Notably, Scindia Ghat is also a site for cremations, reflecting its deep spiritual significance. The Gwalior royal family undertook its reconstruction in 1949, further enhancing its status as one of the most visited ghats along the Ganga River.

सिंधिया घाट
